Sheriff Samuel Bartley is speaking out after the Jefferson County Salary Board voted to cut two positions from his office — a full-time deputy and a sergeant.
Bartley, who was on vacation when the last-minute meeting was scheduled, said the cuts were made despite earlier warnings about staff shortages affecting legal tax sale postings. Commissioner Scott North defended the decision, saying the positions were reassigned to the tax assessment office to avoid redundant costs. Bartley disagrees, arguing the change won’t save taxpayers money and pointing to nearly $14,000 in unpaid credits owed to his office for past work.
